Robot hiking dogs in the Swiss Alps could cross different planets

You might be thinking, “What exactly is a robot dog and what exactly does a robot dog do?” Well it can do a lot of things, everything without the help of the humans around him.

The robot dog’s name is ANYmal (get it?), and it’s designed to traverse all sorts of different terrain and landscapes, previously too dangerous for humans to reach…yes, including other planets.

This robot dog can walk on any type of terrain. What else can I do?

All of this research was done by ETH Zurich in Switzerland; they also included a new skill that other previous robotic dogs didn’t have – as it traverses all the rough terrain, it still takes care of itself while moving fast.

This robot dog is also able to use its senses to essentially “see” any obstacles ahead.

Here is what a PhD student from the research team had to say:

Until now, when a robot mainly used perception, it just assumed that the map was always correct.

~ Takahiro Miki, PhD student at the Robotics Systems Lab at ETH Zurich

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OBSTACLES DESIGNED BY THE ROBOTICS TEAM FOR THE DOG?

Features such as deep snow and tall grass were used as some of the more challenging additions to the landscape. These are things that might not be on an original card, something new that has come up.

Whenever the dog hit such an obstacle, his foot was not allowed to touch the ground as his senses would go crazy, letting the dog know that something unknown was in his way.

WHERE EXACTLY WAS IT TESTED AND WHAT WAS THE GROUND LIKE?

Mount Etzel in the Swiss Alps was where this original test was carried out. His measurements reigned at just 1,098 meters above sea level.

Here is what Miki (the same PhD student mentioned above) had to say about the tests carried out at Mount Etzel high up in the Swiss Alps:

The incline was quite steep, like it was even hard for us at times. It was quite exhausting but the robot could overcome all these obstacles and we didn’t need to help the robot.

The company that did all of this research, with all of the robotics team members included, hopes that all of ANYmal’s skills can also reach other places on planet Earth, and hopefully deploy a day in various space missions too!

While there was are other robotic puppies on the market, ANYmal is definitely a bark!

what you think of ANYmal! ? Can his skills help space missions and pave the way for other robot dogs? !
