Mountain biking in Bogue Chitto State Park
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – If you’re into mountain biking on mountain trails, you don’t have to leave Louisiana to experience the thrill.
Twelve miles of mountain bike trails open up this weekend in Bogue Chitto State Park.
It’s a fast paced, adrenaline-filled race that will test your cycling skills. The creators of these new mountain biking trails in Bogue Chitto State Park near Franklinton have high expectations.
âWe can take this trail here and put it anywhere in the country and people would come and walk it. And it’s that kind of world-class trail system that we have here, âsays Toby Cortez.
Cortez is part of the Northshore Off-Road Bicycling Association, the group and other volunteers contributed countless hours of work and raised funds to help pay for the construction. And they’ve found a great partner with Bogue Chitto State Park.
âWith the support of the state park system, we’ve found some nice land here where they can do these nice extensions. It’s pretty hilly for southern Louisiana and I’m pretty sure it’s about a 200ft elevation difference. We are able to use some of these climbs and descents in the cycle path network, âsays Tony Frickey.
The trails are classified into three skill levels. Green for beginners, blue for intermediates and black diamond for more experienced cyclists.
âMassive jumps, then we have massive falls. Looks like you’re getting off a diving board and actually going through two of the spaces to pass on bikes crossing the trail, âCortez explains.
âIt’s the thrill and it’s an adrenaline rush. I’m a Type A personality. And I like to go fast and I like to work hard, âsays Nina Rogers.
Rogers, who comes from Baton Rouge, and his friend Jennifer Bush, discover the new trails.
âI like being in the woods. This is very fun. So being on the outside, the rush, the thrill, âsays Bush.
You can practice and develop your skills in this progressive jump park with jumps ranging from beginner to advanced.
âI would say to anyone new to take it easy, learn to navigate the roots and miss the trees. It’s a lot of fun, âsays Rogers.
The bike trails are in addition to other attractions in the state park, which is just a 90-minute drive from New Orleans or Baton Rouge. There is tubing and boating on the Bogue Chitto River, a more than five mile hilly trail for hiking, horseback riding, disc golf, and camping.
“It was really a vision to come and not only to put a mountain bike track, but also to put a whole park and a whole network of mountain bike tracks where everyone can come and enjoy it,” said Cortez.
And the developers expect these trails to be a major draw for cyclists who can now experience the thrill of mountain biking much closer to home.
