Construction of a new mountain biking and hiking trail on Mount Jesmond has started.
This project, located in the Marble Mountains near Clinton, aims to add more than eight kilometers of new trails to the area. The trail will include trails suitable for intermediate and expert mountain bikers and further establish the Cariboo as a mountain biking mecca.
“Variety is the key to the development of mountain biking tourism. Key stakeholders identified the need for a unique regional trail within British Columbia that begins in the mountains and provides guest cyclists with a truly unique experience, ”said Thomas Schoen, President of the Cariboo Mountain Bike Consortium .
Schoen said that over the past few years he has seen a number of long, cross-country ski-oriented and challenging climbing trails built in the area. Such trails are in high demand, as visiting cyclists seek “all-day” experiences, he said.
First Journey Trails won the contract and are currently working to complete it by November. They specialize in hand-built single track trails and have helped plan the Williams Lake mountain bike trail system. First Journey Trails workers receive assistance from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, which provides local workers and logistical support through the Big Bar Guest Ranch.
Funding for the project comes from the Targeted Regional Tourism Development Initiative, one of three tourism investment programs that are part of StrongerBC. Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association CEO Amy Thacker said the investment will provide “a recovery in collaborative tourism.
“The Cariboo Chilcotin Coast initiatives reflect the strength of our rural partnerships and our commitment to sustainability that will support local recovery for years to come,” she said.
This new trail will provide a crucial connection to existing regional networks of infrastructure, trails and tourism experiences. It is expected to support the growing demand for outdoor and mountain biking experiences in the Cariboo Chilcotin coastal region.
