Mountain lovers looking for a hideaway within half an hour of skiing have options to consider in the Queenstown Lake District.

The Alpine Village of Mt Cardrona Station has released its fourth ward – with smaller sections, priced at $495,000 – cheaper than previous offerings.

Homeowners will have access to nearly 370 hectares of undeveloped upland and 30 km of walking and cycling trails.

The first 11 of 26 lots in this neighborhood, called The Ridges, range from 300 square meters to 570 square meters.

Mt Cardrona Station developers plan to have 437 total lots completed by 2030.

Resort co-owner Chris Morton, director of Morton Property Group, said the sections will appeal to people who want to retire there or have a second home, especially “outdoors and energetic people”.

“You can get out of your house and walk for five minutes or walk for five hours. You get lost or walk five minutes to the cafe.

A communal center, called The Homestead, will be built by the first quarter of 2024 and will include a gym, swimming pool, restaurant and business center, Morton says.

An Aucklander, Morton himself has shares in a location in Arrowtown and enjoys rock climbing and hiking in the South Island.

“It was really going there that inspired me. There are many charming places in the country, but there it is very special.

“Part of my dream is to provide a place where people can live their dreams, with all the access to the outdoors that many people crave.”

Sections of the Ridges are for sale either ‘land only’, in which case buyers can design their own home, or they can use one of three concepts from award-winning Auckland firm Leuschke Group Architects.

Buyers are required to start construction within five years.

Of the 26 sites, the first 11 to be liberated are Enright’s Ridge, named after Irish immigrants to the area in the 1870s.

Estate agent Myles Green, of Sotheby’s International Realty, says his company has already taken a lot of interest in the new neighborhood.

“These lots offer expansive views, immediate access to the reserve and ample opportunity to design a home.

“There is an exhilarating lifestyle available here. During the winter months, owners can reach the mountain via a private ski transfer and return to enjoy the après ski and hot pools.

“In the summer the action will be much the same, although they will swap skis for a bike and access the trail network or use the gymnasium, workout spaces and pool.”

Green says the sections are elevated “to maximize mountain and valley views,” and return directly to the reserve.

The resort is a 20 minute drive from Cardrona Alpine Resort and just a 12 minute drive from the Valley View lift which also accesses the Cardrona ski area.

It is a 20 minute drive from Wānaka, 30 minutes from Arrowtown, 45 minutes from Queenstown and about 50 minutes from Treble Cone.

Previous neighborhoods released late last year have attracted buyers from across New Zealand and Australia, as well as residents of Queenstown, and construction is well underway, Green said.
